Come, Fly With Me

February

Jambo Rafiki,

My February started off as any February should, hanging out with friends on a hot, sunny beach in Thailand.

One might think that after such a blissful start it could only go downhill. Au contraire, it just got better and better and then worse.

I visited Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, and Lesotho this month.

I enjoyed a relaxing stay in my birth country, visiting the McAlisters in Dar es Salaam. Captain McAlister took us out to a magnificent reef that surfaces during low tide.

We went reef walking where I learned many new things, like if you squeeze a Sea Cucumber, you may get more than you bargained for. The snorkeling was incredible, we saw lion fish, moray eels, sting rays and pretty star fish.

Later, I had a chance to catch up with former Vesalius College buddy, Evan Mulokosi. He showed me around some of the dodgey night life in Dar. All pictures of that evening have been misplaced. Sorry.

On my way to Kenya we flew over Mount Kilimanjaro. After having climbed it a few years back, it was nice to see it from this perspective. It looks a lot warmer from inside an airplane.

Took a train from Lesotho to Cape Town. Best city in Africa. Go there, you’ll love it. Table Mountain is lovely. Robben Island is a guilt trap for the white people. Total waste of time, which is probably what Mandela thought too.

Most interesting part of that island is the Jackass Penguin. They’re everywhere. And despite the name quite adorable.

Even though I was at the southern tip of Africa, the South Pole is still 6000 KM away.

I had intended on getting this to you at the beginning of the month. However, I had my lap top stolen at the airport in Cape Town on February 28th . Only now had a chance to reconstruct my trip.

That was my February,

Lars
